That such distinctions were made not only by spiritualists but also non-spiritualists and the press suggests there might have been something in this. Indeed, when periodicals framed the phenomena as trickery, and cited conjuring performances in support, they cited straightforward conjuring effects more often than pseudo-spiritualist demonstrations, suggesting that the latter were not as effective as intended.113 And, some years later, when a former fraudulent medium revealed the methods he and other mediums used, he noted that ‘[t]here is absolutely no resemblance of any kind or description, to the séance of the “medium”, in these alleged exposes of the professional magician’.114 In other words, rejecting such duplications as invalid was not such an odd thing to do, but regardless of whether or not it was warranted, it was a means of maintaining the position that séance phenomena were not the result of trickery.
